OBJECTIVE

To review the proposed classification of incisional hernias at various stages of herniology development for use of the unified classification of incisional hernias in surgical practice and publications for comparison of various methods of hernioplasty.

KEY POINTS

There has been a huge variety of classifications of incisional hernias and individual approaches to them since the beginning of the 20th century. However, at the moment, there is no consensus on which is most appropriate.

CONCLUSION

To compare the results of various methods of hernioplasty and to objectively assess the results of hernia repair in patients with incisional hernias of various herniological schools, it is necessary to use in practice the approved classification of incisional hernias of the European Herniological Society, which is also recommended by the All-Russian Society of Herniologists. For the patients with complex incisional hernias, we also propose to determine the ratio of hernia volume to abdominal cavity volume according to computed tomography and the severity class according to Slater N.J. et al. (2014).
