Cholesterosis of the gallbladder — beyond ultrasound phenomenon

OBJECTIVE

We reviewed current data on the etiology, epidemiology, pathogenesis, and diagnosis of gallbladder cholesterosis (GC).

MAIN POINTS

Gallbladder cholesterosis (GC) is considered a part of the lipid disorder in its early stages. Risk factors for GC development are atherogenic dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, endothelial dysfunction, and overweight. The scientific community discusses the role of H. pylori as a possible trigger of dyslipidemia and gallbladder wall pathological changes. The polypoid form of the GC is considered a benign lesion, so patients need repeated follow-up examinations and correction of the lipid profile. In the article, we discuss diagnostic methods of the GC, differential diagnosis with malignant lesions, and risk factors for GC complications.

CONCLUSION

GC should be considered as one of the early manifestations of metabolic syndrome. Therefore, assessment of the risk factors of the GC on the first visit and early correction of dyslipidemia reduces cardiovascular complications in this group of patients.
