ABSTRACT Takotsubo syndrome is an acute, reversible myocardial dysfunction that leads to transient left ventricular apical ballooning and to the development of acute heart failure in 45% of cases. Unlike primary TS, the secondary TS develops in patients hospitalized due to another disease. According to a number of studies, takotsubo syndrome develops in 7—40% of ICU patients with severe comorbidity and is one of the main causes of acute heart failure. The mortality rate in this group of patients in a number of studies varies from 17 to 30%, which is twice as much as the overall ICU mortality. Despite its high prevalence, the treatment of takotsubo syndrome has not been studied well. All existing recommendations are based on local register data. In this review, the definitions of primary and secondary TS are given; the main provoking factors and conditions leading to the development of the disease and diagnostic criteria are presented; and the main aspects of treatment are considered.
