We examined 182 patients with epilepsy using the evaluation of anamnesis, clinical and neurological examination, routine EEG and/or video-EEG-monitoring, MRI of the brain. The period of observation was 1-11 years (on average 2 years). Anxiety and depression symptoms were screened with the Hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS). Health-related quality of life was examined with the Quality of Life in Epilepsy Inventory (QOLIE-31, version 1). The diagnosis was confirmed in 166 cases and nonepileptic seizures were diagnosed in 16 cases. Subclinical anxiety (8-10 HADS scores) was identified in 23 (12.6%), clinical anxiety (>10 scores) - in 47 (25.8%), subclinical depression (8-10 scores) - in 25 (13.7%) and clinical depression (>10 scores) - in 23 (12.6%) cases. Comorbidity of anxiety and depression was noted in 33 (18.1%) patients. The high level of anxiety was correlated with the young age and short duration of epilepsy. Anxiety (r=0.7; p<0.05) and depression (r=0.63; p<0.05) were significantly correlated with the poor quality of life.
