Abstract:

The paper pools many years' experience gained by the authors and the results of research publications on the current methods for the diagnosis and treatment of threatening preterm labor. At the same time, emphasis is laid on that transvaginal ultrasonographic data are of great importance in the diagnosis. The basic procedures for correcting isthmicocervical incompetence are to apply a circular suture to the cervix uteri and to use an obstetric unloading pessary. Conservative management of premature pregnancy complicated by amniorrhea is most warranted before 34 weeks gestation. Indications for abdominal delivery during preterm labor and conditions required for successful care of premature babies are given.
