Aim. To elucidate the correlation relationships between the intensity of caries and the major parameters characterizing the mineralization factor of the oral cavity. Material and methods. The study included children at the age of 7 years (n=25) and 12—13 years (n=25) free from chronic somatic pathology. The intensity of caries, salivation rate, and the mineralizing potential of the oral cavity were investigated by the method of P.A. Leus (the assessment of crystal formation in the saliva) and by the biochemical methods including determination of potassium, phosphorus, and pH of the oral fluid. The correlation relationships were estimated using the Pearson correlation coefficient allowing to compare two different quantities. The calculations were made with the help of the on-line calculator. Results. The study has demonstrated direct correlation between the intensity of caries and the parameters of mineralizing potential in the oral fluid. The children aged 7 years showed a more pronounced negative correlation between the saliva calcium level and the intensity of caries. In the group of 12—13 year-old children, the intensity of caries increased with decreasing salivation rate. The low calcium content in the oral fluid from the children of both age groups was associated with the normal phosphorus level which accounted for the low values of the calcium/phosphorus coefficient.
