Abstract:

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can present with some extra-esophageal signs and symptoms, including those related to the nose: nasal congestion, rhinorrhea, nasal discharge resistant to conventional treatment, which is caused by high laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) called nasopharyngeal reflux disease (NPD).

OBJECTIVE

To study nasal signs and symptoms of NPD in patients with extra-esophageal manifestations of GERD.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

The study included 100 patients (66 females and 34 males) aged 18 to 70 years with symptoms suggesting LFR.

RESULTS AND CONCLUSION

The following nasal manifestations of LPR have been identified: nasal congestion, rhinorrhoea, nasal decongestant addiction, burning and dryness in the nose, and sneezing in the absence of respiratory allergy. Omeprazole therapy (20 mg once a day for six weeks, taken 30 min before the meal in the morning) statistically significantly reduced not only typical manifestations of LFR but also its nasal symptoms.
