Abstract:

The review gives the data available in the literature on the prevalence of nasal septal perforations (NSP) and describes the etiological factors leading to their development. It considers iatrogenic (nasal septal surgery, nasal bone repositions) and occupational risk factors and describes the causes of NSP in the abuse of different intranasal substances, because of systemic inflammatory or infectious diseases, neoplasms, as well as those occurring after systemic chemotherapy. The disease symptoms, such as wheezing, dryness, nasal hemorrhage, external nasal deformity, are described according to the sizes and position of NSP; the types of asymptomatic perforations are considered. The paper depicts the medical treatment for large NSP, which is per palliative for this pathology. It presents surgical treatments that are aimed at not perforation closure, but may improve nasal breathing and alleviate the manifestation of the disease. If there are contraindications to plastic NSP closure, a procedure for using nasal septal buttons is proposed as an alternative to surgical treatment.
