Today, every tenth European takes proton pump inhibitors (PPI) on a regular basis. PPIs are safe drugs; still, their continuous intake increases the possibility of adverse events significantly. There is evidence that long-term use of PPIs is associated with a higher cardiovascular risk, the risk of synergism and antagonism of drug interactions with PPIs, digestive infections, kidney diseases, dementia, malabsorption syndrome, oncological diseases, myopathy, and microscopic colitis. Therefore, a search for optimal ways of using PPIs and prevention of possible side effects with their long-term use is an acute medico-social issue. This is especially true considering that about half of PPI prescription cases do not include a proper assessment of the PPI feasibility. The article aims to describe the side effects of long-term use of PPI and measures to prevent them, considering the achievements of modern gastroenterology.
