Abstract There is a rising global burden of chronic noncommunicable diseases (CNCDs) that are associated with significant socioeconomic damage and their growing burden on the health system. Epidemiological findings suggest that eating an excessive amount of sugar in non-alcoholic beverages (NAB) makes a substantial contribution to overall morbidity. Economic measures to promote a healthy lifestyle (HLS), including the introduction of a tax on NAB, are recommended by the WHO as an effective way to stimulate HLS at the population level. The NAB tax has already been introduced in many countries. The paper assesses the appropriateness of introducing the NAB tax in Russia in order to reduce the prevalence of overweight and obesity, by taking into account world experience, which shows that the use of the taxes makes this measure legitimate and approvable in the eyes of the population and will improve its health in the long term.
