Objective — to investigate the prevalence of some risk factors for non-communicable diseases among young people for further development of preventive measures. Subject and methods. A total of 266 medical students (24% were boys, 76% were girls; p<0.0001) were examined. The students’ mean age was 20.6±3.7 years. Screening encompassed a questionnaire survey to identify their passport data and lifestyle indicators; physical examination and psychological testing. Statistical analysis of the data was performed using Statistica version 6.0 software package («StatSoft Inc.», USA). Results. The investigation revealed the high prevalence of risk factors for non-communicable diseases and their concurrences. Risk factors were not found in only 1.5% of the young men. A combination of two or more risk factors was identified in 84.4% of the boys and in 89.1% of the girls. The most common risk factors among the surveyed students were eating less than five servings of fruits and vegetables a day (93.8% of the boys and 96% of the girls) and passive smoking (55.4% and 24.6% respectively; p<0.0001). There was underweight (1.6% of the boys and 16.3% of the girls) (p<0.01), abdominal obesity (10.9 and 8.9%), and overweight (23.4 and 4%; p<0.0001). Conclusion. The real prevalence of some risk factors of non-communicable diseases was established. The findings can be used to work out and implement prevention programs aimed at modifying the most common population risk factors.
