The paper focusses on the topical issues of preventive counselling in individuals with high and very high cardiovascular risk. Modification of behavioral risk factors (RFs) leads to a significant decrease in the spread and magnitude of cardiovascular RFs and improves patient compliance with medication and general improvements to lifestyle. Epidemiologic data suggest that even modest improvements in lipids, blood pressure, glucose, and weight can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease and stroke in individuals with high and very high cardiovascular risk.
