Numerous clinical and epidemiological studies suggesting a close association between coronary heart disease (CHD) and cerebrovascular diseases (CVDs) are reviewed. Information characterizing the unity of approaches to preventing CHD and CVDs is given. The major clinical forms of CVDs and their prognostic value are described in detail. Particular emphasis is placed on the achievements of Russian and foreign investigators in developing and using epidemiological techniques to examine the population, primarily validated CHD and CVD questionnaires. The data given in the review suggest that it is expedient to use screening techniques to identify people at high risk for CHD and CVDs in order to improve the work of outpatient facilities in diagnosing, preventing, and treating circulatory system disorders.
