Abstract:

The paper considers the epidemiological aspects of metabolic syndrome (MS) and criteria for its diagnosis. The authors analyze the prevalence of MS in foreign countries, in the Russian Federation, and its individual regions and outline the results of their own observations. The prevalence of MS and its components is shown to be related to gender, age, race, psychosocial factors, and used diagnostic criteria. It is concluded that the uniform international criteria for and definitions of MS should be used.
