Objective: to study the prevalence and specific features of metabolic syndrome (MS) in a random sample of the adult population from one city of the Volga Federal District (Cheboksary, Chuvashia) and to assess the time course of changes in the degree and complications of MS 6 years later. Materials and methods. The trend in the prevalence of MS in Cheboksary was traced for 6 years: from 2006 to 2012. MS is a cluster of hypertension with abdominal obesity, hyperglycemia (impaired glucose tolerance or diabetes), high triglycerides, and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in conjunction with insulin resistance. Results. The data obtained in the first part of the study of the random samples of the adult Cheboksary population indicated that MS was encountered in an average of 20.6% of cases. Their reexamination using the ATP III criteria in 2012 revealed MS twice more frequently in the women than in the men (297 (32%) and 87 (14.4%) cases, respectively. According to the IDF criteria, MS was diagnosed in 323 (34.8%) female examines and in 192 (31.8%) male ones. Conclusion. Thus, MS is highly prevalent in one Russian population. Overall, the detection and correction of MS plays an important role for the primary prevention of cardiovascular diseases.
