The paper gives current ideas on erectile dysfunction as an interdisciplinary problem, its association with cardiovascular diseases and metabolic syndrome. It considers the leading pathophysiological mechanisms for the development of this pathological condition: atherogenic - vascular and hormonal - androgen-deficient, their mutually stipulating action and the contribution of metabolic disturbances in each of these mechanisms. Attention is drawn to the common pattern of the pathogenesis of erectile dysfunction and cardiovascular diseases and the parallelism of their clinical course. The problem of statin therapy for erectile dysfunction is characterized; different effects of statins and those on male sex function are considered.
