INTRODUCTION

Today, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain one of the leading causes of death in many countries around the world. Therefore, early detection of the main risk factors for CVDs is an important component for cardiovascular complications prevention.

OBJECTIVE

To determine the capabilities of radiation methods for diagnosing subclinical atherosclerosis in assessing the likelihood of coronary heart disease in patients without a previous cardiac history and other comorbidities that increase cardiovascular risks.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

An analysis of published papers from 2012 to the present on non-invasive methods for assessing coronary artery calcification (CAC) was conducted. The article also discusses the algorithm for CAC assessing using the example of a clinical case of a patient and the American classification system of CAC by the level of the Agatston index assessment.

RESULTS

An analysis of published papers on CAC assessment showed a growing interest in non-invasive radiation diagnostic methods and the relevance of their use as a primary screening for cardiovascular pathology. To calculate the total calcium index (TCI), one should use the combination of the Agatston calcium index, visual index, and the number of coronary arteries involved in the calcification process.

CONCLUSION

The search for new markers of early atherosclerosis based on standard chest computed tomography data is a relevant and progressive method for early diagnosis and prevention of cardiovascular diseases in the future.
