Objective - to study the efficacy, safety and tolerability of the extended regimen of COC containing ethinylestradiol 20 μg/drospirenone 3 mg in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). Мaterial and methods. Pilot study randomly (1:1) allocated 60 women (aged 18-40 years) with DM to the following regimens: conventional (24 days of active hormonal intake followed by a 4-day hormone-free interval) or fixed extended (120 days of uninterrupted active hormonal intake followed by 4-day tablet-free interval). Duration of active treatment phase was 140 days. Results. High efficacy was demonstrated for both regimens. There was no negative influence of both regimens to carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. The general duration of bleeding/spotting days decreased whereas the number of spotting days increased in extended regimen in comparison to conventional regimen. The extended regimen of COC is effective and safe for DM type 1 women, who have no contraindication for this type of contraception.
