OBJECTIVE

To describe upper and lower jaw defect closure in children using vascularized fibular autografts and to analyze postoperative outcomes.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The authors present 3 patients after extensive resections for widespread benign tumors and subsequent mandibular reconstruction.

RESULTS

Oromandibular function was restored in all patients.

CONCLUSION

Microsurgical closure of lower jaw defect using a vascularized fibular autograft with simultaneous intraosseous dental implantation and orthopedic rehabilitation is a fairly reliable method that can be successfully used in childhood. A special attention must be paid to the issues related to further growth of the child because restoration of mandibular and maxillary relationship is necessary for correct development of the facial skull. Indeed, it is a dynamic process with correlation of the growth of the mandible and maxilla.
