Abstract:

The modern approach to surgical interventions and principles of the training of physicians in Russia was pioneered by N.I. Pirogov. All his life he advocated the comprehensive and integrated clinical anatomical approach in both research and practical work with the wounded and sick persons, and as well as the training and education of physicians. The new organizational form for integrated teaching operative surgery and topographic anatomy within the Surgical Department without a clinic, which was established in 1865, was a creative development of N.I. Pirogov’s ideas, as applied to the new, qualitatively changed conditions for aseptic and antiseptic surgery. N.I. Pirogov created an original highly effective system for integrated teaching anatomy in accord with the surgery in the interests of clinical medicine, the basic features of which persist today.
