Abstract:

OBJECTIVE

To summarize the results of studies of early oral feeding after esophageal and stomach cancer surgery.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The actual data were obtained from the results of one meta-analysis and ten clinical studies of early oral feeding in patients who had undergone stomach and esophageal cancer surgical interventions. In addition to the data available in the literature, there is a protocol of nutritional support in the early postoperative period, which is used at the Moscow Oncology Research Institute, after esophageal and stomach cancer surgery.

RESULTS

Early oral feeding after gastrectomy, gastric resection, and esophagectomy is safe and does not increase the risk of postoperative complications, including anastomotic incompetence. Early oral feeding reduces the length of hospitalization and postoperative bed days, accelerates the recovery of intestinal function after surgery, and improves quality of life.

CONCLUSION

Early oral feeding after esophageal and stomach cancer surgery is the optimal method of nutritional support; it is fully consistent with the ERAS principles and can be recommended for wide use in practical oncology.
