OBJECTIVE

To improve the results of surgical treatment in patients with locally advanced thoracic tumors invading the great vessels and heart.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Examinations were made in 45 patients operated on for locally advanced space-occupying lesions invading the large intrathoracic vessels and/or heart. Of them, 26 patients were diagnosed with different types of mediastinal tumors; 19 had non-small cell lung cancer. Unlike Group 2, Group 1 underwent surgical intervention using cardiac surgical technologies.

RESULTS

The overall rates of postoperative complications and deaths were higher than average in oncological practice (53.3% and 8.2%, respectively). The study of short-term results showed that higher survival rates and fewer complications were observed in Group 2; however, the analysis of long-term outcomes indicated that life expectancy rose substantially in Group 1 patients.

CONCLUSION

Cardiac surgical technologies improve oncological and surgical operability in patients with locally advanced thoracic neoplasms.
