The authors analyze 284 palliative operations and their clinical experience with combination treatment in patients with disseminated gastric cancer (palliative surgery followed by chemotherapy in the period 1987 to 2011. All patients (n=101), who received combination therapy, were randomized to 2 groups: 1) 48 patients had postoperative chemotherapy using the FAP regimen (5-fluorouracil, adriamycin, and cisplatin) (a control group); 2) 53 received monotherapy with Xeloda (a study group). The frequency and spectrum of complications of drug treatment, objective response rates, patient survival, and direct treatment cost were comparatively analyzed. According to the all above criteria, Xeloda demonstrated considerable clinical and economic advantages.
