Abstract:

Surgery yields the best treatment results. The performed multicenter randomized studies have shown the benefits of adjuvant chemotherapy in patients with Stages IB-III non-small-cell lung carcinoma (NSLC). The available data on the impact of postoperative radiotherapy (PORT) on the results of NSLC therapy are conflicting and give no clear recommendation for its use. It is pointed out that after radical surgical treatment many patients develop local recurrences that may be reduced by PORT. Moreover, there is no significant positive impact on survival rates in the total cohort of radically operated patients. To specify indications for PORT calls for in-depth studies, including the randomized trials taking into account the prognostic risk factors for a recurrence and possible postradiation complications.
