Abstract:

The paper analyzes the results of hepatic transarterial chemoembolization for metastatic colorectal cancer (MCRC) and evaluates its efficiency. Tumor response to treatment was assessed using the computed tomographic data according to the RECIST criteria. Progression and survival were calculated applying the Kaplan-Meier method. Results: A total 201 chemoembolization sessions were performed in 130 patients. 115 of 130 patients were held for observation: 6 patients (5.2%) showed a partial response, 52 (45.2%) had stabilization of the disease, and 54 (49.6%) had its progression. Survival was better when chemoembolization had been performed after the first or second course of systemic therapy (12.8 months) than after 3 or more courses (9.8 months) (p=0.03). Extrahepatic metastases worsened survival rates (p=0.48). Conclusion: Transarterial chemoembolization for MCRC allows the disease to be stabilized in 50.2% of cases. The median survival was 26 months after detection of liver metastases, and 16 months after the initiation of chemoembolization.
