OBJECTIVE

To evaluate clinical and economic feasibility of providing patients with test strips for blood glucose level monitoring with a frequency indicated in clinical guidelines in the Russian Federation.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Cost-effectiveness analysis was carried out using the Markov modeling method. Statistical data were obtained from the Federal Register of Patients with Diabetes Mellitus. Data on clinical effectiveness of glucose control are obtained from a systematic review. We assumed no systematic blood glucose level monitoring in current practice and adherence of patients to self-monitoring of blood glucose in the modeled scenario.

RESULTS

Providing diabetic patients with blood glucose test strips in accordance with the calculations performed is becoming the dominant strategy in mid-term perspective (10 years) and also decreases the number of complications of diabetes mellitus (if the above-mentioned assumptions are accepted).

CONCLUSION

We analyzed clinical and economic feasibility of providing patients with test strips for diabetes mellitus type 1 and 2. Providing with test strips is clinically and economically justified and can reduce the number of adverse events, mortality and treatment cost. The modeled scenario becomes dominant after 6 years in patients with diabetes mellitus type 1 and after 10 years in patients with diabetes type 2.
