Assessment of skin condition is necessary for dermatologists and cosmetologists. While it is routine practice for dermatologists to assess the skin condition using physical and instrumental methods, cosmeticians rarely use additional skin examination methods. It may be partly due to a misunderstanding of the uses and capabilities of the various methods, and partly, it may be due to a desire to save time at a cosmetologist’s visit. Nevertheless, evaluation of age-related skin changes and assessment of the skin condition change after treatment is extremely important for targeted therapy. Therefore, the objective of the review was to summarize the current capabilities of clinical and instrumental diagnosis of age-related skin changes being the most common issue in the cosmetologists’ practice. This review addresses a variety of diagnostic methods, from the simplest to the most complex and invasive ones. Particular attention is paid to ultrasonic diagnostics of facial soft tissues, and recent evidence from Russian and foreign sources is systematized and generalized.
