Discovery of new non-invasive and easy to use methods to assess the degree of burns is due to the need for early determination of tactics of burn wound management. Dermatoscopy is a conventional method in dermatological practice that provides magnified images of structures of the skin in real time. It was not previously used in assessment of wounds. Objective. The objective of the study was to examine the possibilities of dermatoscopy in the assessment of burn wounds. Material and methods. We used Heine Delta 20 and Nandyscope dermatoscopes connected to iPhone4. The study was conducted in patients aged 18 years and older with I–III-degree thermal burns. Modification of the dermatoscopy method for the purposes of studying wounds using sterile film was first developed. Results. It was shown that dermatoscopic picture of burns depends on the depth of tissue damage and there are characteristic features of different degrees of burns, characterized by a general background, vascular pattern, and appearance of the mouths of the hair follicles. Dermatoscopy is safe and simple method and therefore it can be used to evaluate burn surfaces. Taking digital dermatoscopic photo images of burns provides the objectified assessment of wound healing over time. Conclusion. The first experience of using dermatoscopy in evaluation of the depth of tissue damage from burns confirmed that this method is promising and its further development is required.
