Safety is the main requirement for cardiopulmonary bypass. The criteria for critical periods during perfusion are incidents. Therefore, increasing perfusion safety is determined by prevention of incidents. Incidents during perfusion may be related to equipment, monitoring devices, perfusion and myocardial protection techniques, surgical technique and communication between members of surgical team. Considering modern data, we analyzed the causes of incidents and their characteristics during cardiopulmonary bypass. Thus, increasing perfusion safety is ensured by prevention of incidents through implementation of protocols and standards of cardiopulmonary bypass.
