Arterial hypertension is an independent risk factor for the development of adverse cardiovascular events, disability and mortality. Adequate blood pressure control is a pressing issue that is now receiving increasing attention. The article provides an overview of clinical studies of the angiotensin II receptor blocker telmisartan, a drug that has shown efficacy for the treatment of arterial hypertension both in monotherapy and in combination with other classes of antihypertensive drugs. Data of clinical studies on positive influence of telmisartan on the course of diabetes mellitus, frequency of development of repeated strokes, remodeling of heart chambers are presented. The article also considers possibilities of using imidazoline receptor antagonist moxonidine in therapy of arterial hypertension in special cases.
