Aim. To compare the quality of life in the patients presenting with primary lower limb varicose veins in the late follow-up period after the sclerosurgical treatment (intraoperative catheter-guided sclero-obliteration of the great saphenous vein trunk) and surgical intervention (combined phlebectomy). Material and methods. The present research was designed as a retrospective study. A total of 228 patients presenting with initially identical clinical class of chronic venous insufficiency were available for the examination. 153 of them had undergone the sclerosurgical intervention and 75 ones were treated by combined phlebectomy. The patients were followed up during a period from 5 to 9 years. The standard SF-36 and CIVIQ-2 quality of life questionnaires were employed. Results. The patients with class C4-C6 trophic disorders showed significantly higher quality of life scores (based on both SF-36 and CIVIQ-2 questionnaires) during the follow-up period after stem sclero-obliteration compared with the patients of the remaining groups. However, the results of the study taken together reveal only minor differences between the groups treated by sclerosurgical correction and phlebectomy as regards the majority of the quality of life characteristics.
