Thoracoscopic reconstruction of esophageal atresia in newborn is an alternative to surgical management of the disease through thoracotomy. The aim of the study was to compare the results of treatment of two groups of patients (n=73) for the last 11 years: 41 newborn patients of the 1st group after conventional thoracotomy and 32 patients of the 2nd group who underwent videoassisted thoracosopic creation of esophageal anastomosis. Demographic, intra- and postoperative parameters were compared. Groups were similar in demographic and other preoperative characteristics. Significant differences were revealed in duration of the surgery between open and thoracosopic procedures (111.93 min vs. 85.63 min; p<0.05). Length of stay in neonatal intensive care unit and length of hospital stay were markedly lower in the 2ndgroup (12.12 days vs. 7.63 days; p<0.05; 31,49 vs. 22.91 days; p<0.05). Number of early postoperative complications in both groups were similar (36.59% vs. 18.75%; p<0.05). Late postoperative complications were prevalent in patients after thoracotomy (21.35% vs. 0; p=0.039). Thoracoscopic creation of anastomosis in newborn was concluded to provide better results than open surgery.
