Abstract:

OBJECTIVE

To analyze the quality of life indicators in patients after inguinal hernia repair using Lichtenstein tension-free mesh repair and laparoscopic transabdominal preperitoneal repair.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A prospective controlled study included 67 patients with inguinal hernias. Patients in Group 1 underwent Lichtenstein tension-free mesh repair (LHR) with a lightweight macroporous monofilament composite polypropylene implant, while patients in Group 2 underwent laparoscopic transabdominal preperitoneal hernia repair (TAPP) with a similar polypropylene implant fixed using staplers at standard points. The patients’ physical and psychological health indicators were evaluated using the SF-36 questionnaire at 3-, 6-, and 12-months post-surgery.

RESULTS

The most significant changes in the physical health component indicators in patients after TAPP were observed at 3 months post-surgery. The relative normalization of the physical health component indicators after LHR compared to TAPP was less pronounced and more delayed. Changes in psychological health component indicators in patients undergoing LHR and TAPP predominantly exhibited a comparable and practically indistinguishable direction of positive change.

CONCLUSION

Compared to LHR, TAPP is associated with earlier recovery of the physical health component and has a substantial impact on patients’ emotional state and social adaptation. This suggests recommending TAPP as the preferred surgery for occupationally active and somatically unburdened categories of patients with inguinal hernias to reduce the duration of their occupational and social rehabilitation.
