Abstract:

This article was designed to discuss the selected clinical-epidemiological characteristics and co-morbidity of endoscopically positive gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) obtained during the examination of 135 patients presenting with this pathology based at 7 medical centres of the city of Perm. The questionnaire studies, the analysis of medical histories, the physical and endoscopic examination of the patients provided the materials for the verification of the diagnosis and elucidation of the possible risk factors of GERD as well as of co-morbid gastroenterological diseases. All the patients were prescribed the basal antisecretory treatment with the use of the modern proton pump inhibitor esomeprazole (Nexium). We estimated the potential advantages of the questionnaire studies for diagnostics of GERD and evaluated the effectiveness of esomeprazole (Nexium) therapy.
