Abstract:

The article is devoted to the 175th anniversary of the first anesthetization performed by N.I. Pirogov on February 26, 1847. The events preceding and following this date are briefly considered. It tells about the achievements of the brilliant surgeon N.I. Pirogov, which served as the basis for the emergence and development of a new medical science in Russia — «anesthesiology». The amazing ability of N.I. Pirogov to use almost modern anesthesiologic terminology in his writings based on the term «anesthesia» and its derivatives is noted.
