Abstract:

The purpose of the review is to systematize and summarize the published results of Russian studies of suicidal behavior in patients with bipolar affective disorder (BAD). The prevalence and features of suicidal behavior in patients with BAD in the Russian Federation have virtually not been studied. The available studies are local, include small groups, and have design limitations. In Russia, few studies have evaluated essential characteristics of suicidal behavior in patients with BAD, and the available data are not entirely consistent with the results of international studies. Russian and foreign researchers agree that comorbid mental and substance dependence disorders are significant risk factors for suicidal behavior of patients with BAD; however, the contribution of each condition to suicidal behavior requires further research. Large-scale nationwide studies of suicidal behavior are necessary in patients with BAD in the Russian population.
