THE PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

Detection of small bladder defects in the postoperative period after repeat caesarean section.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The study enrolled 36 pregnant women with a uterine scar after two or more caesarean sections and who underwent elective abdominal delivery under spinal anesthesia. In the postoperative period, small bladder defects were diagnosed by spiral computed tomography and retrograde cystography on day 3—4 after caesarean section. The patient was laid on her stomach and a delayed scan was performed for 15 seconds on a 128-slice GE EVA Revolution computed tomography scanner 5—7 min later.

RESULTS

Spiral computer retrograde cystotomography with delayed scanning on the 3rd-4th days after cesarean section revealed small bladder defects (1—3 mm) in the postoperative sutures in 86.1% of cases. The position of the patients on the abdomen for 5—7 min and delayed scanning enabled the contrast agent to leak through the minimal defects (1—3 mm) in the postoperative sutures under the weight of the postpartum uterus.

CONCLUSION

The best method to diagnose small bladder defects after repeat caesarean section is to use spiral computed tomography in combination with retrograde cystography in delayed scanning.
