RELEVANCE

In recent years, dryness of the oral cavity, or xerostomia, is often found in the practice of a dentist and other medical specialists. The most common cause of xerostomia was diseases of the nervous system: deterioration of the psychoemotional status of patients, astheno-depressive syndrome, mental diseases, etc.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The authors conducted a study of the psychoemotional state of 54 patients. Of these, there were 31 patients who suffered from objective xerostomia; 13 patients with diseases of the salivary glands without xerostomia and 10 patients without pathology from the salivary glands. The emotional status was studied using a questionnaire on the severity of psychopathological symptoms.

RESULTS

It was found that patients with xerostomia had deviations on nine main scales of symptomatic disorders and experienced psychoemotional stress. Patients with diseases of the salivary glands without xerostomia had deviations only on the 4 main scales and patients of the control group had deviations only on the 2 main scales.

CONCLUSIONS

Thus, patients with xerostomia mainly experienced a deterioration in the quality and perception of life and needed correction of the psychoemotional state.
