Sex hormones have long been considered to play an important role in the development and clinical course of periodontitis, metabolism of the bone tissue, and wound healing. The objective of the present review article is to clarify the relationship between sex hormones and periodontitis and to analyse how these hormones influence periodontiumin different periods of life. It follows from the overviewed publications that sex hormones play a key role in the progress of periodontal disease and wound healing. Moreover, these effects seem to be age and sex-dependent. It may be concluded that the influence of sex hormones can be minimized by means of professional hygiene of the oral cavity and hormone replacement therapy.
