Introduction. The prevalence of a metopic suture in human skulls has been studied by many authors, including in terms of differences in gender and ethnic origin. In a number of works, it was noted that its preservation in adults is often associated with the absence or poor development of frontal sinuses. Aim of this study was to research the occurrence of a metopic suture in the population of the Central Black Earth Zone of the Russian Federation and its connection with the development of frontal sinuses. Materials and methods. The data of computed tomography of 600 patients aged 16 to 86 years living in the Central Black Earth zone of the Russian Federation were analyzed. Result. A metopic suture was found in the studied cohort in 9.0% of cases. The frequency of the combination of the metopic suture with agenesis and hypogenesis of the frontal sinuses was 70.37%, which significantly exceeds the frequency of occurrence of this developmental variant in the studied population (11.3%) and indicates the presence of a direct correlation between the preservation of the metopic suture and underdevelopment of the frontal sinuses. Conclusion. Gender correlation between the preservation of the metopic suture and the development of the frontal sinuses was found — insufficient development of the frontal sinuses is more dependent on the preservation of the metopic suture in men than in women. The relationship between the type of metopic suture and the degree of pneumatization of the frontal sinuses was determined — the persistent and lower suture options in 51.85% of cases are combined with the underdevelopment of both frontal sinuses, and the upper metopic suture is not associated with their development.
