Family medicine is the major element of the health system aimed at disease prevention, early diagnosis and provision of medical care continuity. There is a growing need to assess the effectiveness of family medicine centers in settings of the shortage of staff and increasing incidence of chronic non-communicable diseases.
OBJECTIVE
To analyze the organization and effectiveness of family medicine centers of the Osh region and identify priority areas for their improvement.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Organizational, analytical and sociological study was carried out in 2015—2023. The official data of the Ministry of Health of the Kyrgyz Republic, Center for e-Health, Compulsory Medical Insurance Fund and annual reports of family medicine centers were used. Methods of descriptive and variation statistics were applied using SPSS v.25 program. Differences were considered statistically significant at p<0.05.
RESULTS
A population growth of the Osh region by 25.5% and increase in the number of people seeking medical care have been established. The rate of coverage by family physicians was 87.5% with a standard of 1 doctor per 1700 inhabitants. An imbalance between urban and rural institutions, high burden on doctors and insufficient digitalization of management processes have been noted.
Special attention should be paid to the development of regional advanced professional training courses and implementation of a continuous professional development model for family physicians. Measures for introduction of digital technologies, development of telemedicine as well as creation of incentives for the retention of young professionals are needed.
CONCLUSION
The improvement of family medicine centers should be aimed at strengthening staff capacity, enhancing the role of preventive medicine, digitalization and developing intersectoral cooperation.
