In addition to traditional risk factors and lifestyle, the Neighborhood Environment (NE) is also considered a factor influencing the risk of major chronic non-communicable diseases (CNCDs). This concept is defined as the space in the immediate vicinity (within walking distance) from the place of residence (habitat) of a person, as well as social characteristics of the area of residence, its infrastructure, which can have both positive and negative impact on human health. There is no Russian analog of this term, and no domestic research on the impact of NE was made.
To perform an analytical review of international research on the influence of human environmental factors on the formation of dietary habits.
The high density of fast-food restaurants is associated with increased consumption of foods high in saturated fat, added sugar, and salt, as well as with a higher risk of obesity and CVD. Improved access to healthy foods and walking environments are associated with reduced risk of CVDs and premature mortality.
Domestic research is needed to assess the density of food courts and their association with the prevalence of risk factors and the health status of the Russian population. The availability of reliable data will stimulate multifaceted cooperation for planning the creation of a health-protecting environment at the municipal level.
