Given the special significance of cardiovascular diseases in the main public health indicators, it is of great scientific and practical interest to study the trends in morbidity and in-hospital mortality related to cardiovascular diseases in adults before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

OBJECTIVE

To study trends in morbidity and in-hospital mortality from cardiovascular diseases in the adult population in the Russian Federation during the COVID-19 pandemic.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Based on Annual Forms of Federal Statistical Monitoring No. 12 and No. 14 for 2015—2020, indicators of incidence, overall morbidity, and in-hospital mortality related to cardiovascular diseases in the adult population were calculated.

RESULTS

From 2015 to 2019, in the Russian Federation, an increase in morbidity (by 12.9%) and incidence (by 14.6%) of cardiovascular diseases was observed. In 2020 compared to 2019, there was a decrease in overall morbidity (by 6.5%) and incidence (by 15.9%) related to cardiovascular diseases. From 2015 to 2019, a slight increase (by 7.3%) in in-hospital mortality related to cardiovascular diseases was observed. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 compared to 2019, this indicator increased by 58.9%.

CONCLUSION

A decrease in morbidity related to cardiovascular diseases associated with a significant increase in in-hospital mortality in 2020 reflects the challenging situation in the health care system of the Russian Federation during the COVID-19 pandemic and is also indicative of a worsening course of acute and chronic cardiovascular diseases.
