In 2015 Researchers have found the significant differences in mortality rates by some causes between Moscow and Saint Petersburg.

OBJECTIVE

Comparison of mortality in Moscow and Saint Petersburg in 2015 and 2018. Identification and analys of the 10 main mortality causes.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

ROSSTAT data on population and on number of deaths were used. Mortality rates were calculated by the special computer program based on the European standard.

RESULTS

In 2015 and 2018 total standardized mortality rates (SMR) were higher in Saint Petersburg vs Moscow. Ten main death’ causes formed 55.1% and 48.3% of all the causes in Moscow and 49.4% and 50.2% in Saint Petersburg correspondingly. Identified significant differences in the indicators and the list of leading causes of death for this period in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Only 4 causes were similar in 10 main causes in Moscow and Saint Petersburg: Atherosclerotic heart disease (SMR decreased in 30% in Moscow and increased twice in Saint Petersburg); Cerebral infarction; Other forms of chronic ischemic heart disease; Malignant neoplasm of trachea, bronchus and lung. The number of death reasons which were as higher as 3 times in Saint Petersburg decreased from 29 to 22, 11 of which the same in both years. The number of such causes in Moscow increased from 21 to 26 with 8 the same.

CONCLUSIONS

Significant differences in causes of mortality and 10 main death causes continue to be in two biggest cities in Russia. The death reasons which do not have exact definition and diagnostics criteria are used active in both cities.
