Circulatory system diseases are the most urgent medical and socio-economic problem today. International experience shows that mortality rates from acute cerebrovascular diseases can be reduced through a comprehensive approach that includes the introduction of national programs to improve the prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation in patients. The introduction of a package of measures to improve health care for stroke patients in the Russian Federation has made it possible to establish a uniform stroke care system; to equip stroke centers with up-to-date medical and diagnostic equipment; to train medical staff; to introduce current effective stroke treatments that could substantially reduce stroke mortality and disability.
