OBJECTIVE

The purpose of the study is to present a variation of the pleural cavity drainage technique in the treatment of COVID-19 infected patients. To succeeded in draining of pneumothorax, pleural effusion or empyema the aspiration device with the possibility of disinfection of biological material with ultraviolet radiation was used.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Patients with confirmed COVID-19 infection and present of pneumothorax, pleural effusion or empyema were undergone to pleural cavity drainage using the aspiration device with the possibility of disinfection of biological material with ultraviolet radiation.

RESULTS

The result of using the new device is reducing the risk of infection of medical staff by pathogens including COVID-19. This is provided by disinfection of the blood, fluid and air released from the pleural cavity by ultraviolet irradiation.

CONCLUSION

The proposed technology is an effective method of preventing the viral infection of medical staff during COVID-19 infected patients with pleural drainage hospitalization.
