AIM OF STUDY

To evaluate the immediate clinical results and the incidence of genitourinary disorders in patients undergoing total mesorectumectomy for colorectal cancer using nerve-sparing surgery.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The study included 32 men with resectable rectal cancer. All patients underwent total mesorectumectomy with full preservation of elements of the vegetative nervous system of pelvis.

RESULTS

The duration of the surgical intervention was 268±81.3 min (mean±SD), which generally corresponds to the average time indicators of duration when performing surgical aids in a standard volume. The volume of intraoperative blood loss did not significantly increase and averaged 418±321 ml. Postoperative complications developed in 4 (12.5%) patients. Genitourinary function was evaluated in 31 patients. In 28 (90.3%) patients, urination was restored immediately after the first removal of urinary catheter. 3 months after the operation, satisfactory sexual function was preserved in 7 patients, which amounted to 22.6% among all operated men and 41.2% among men with preserved sexual activity before surgery.

CONCLUSION

Total mesorectumectomy with preservation of elements of the vegetative nervous system of pelvis does not lead to significant changes in urodynamic parameters in the operated patients.
