Objective. To analyze the immediate results of radical laparoscopic colon resection in elderly and senile patients. Materials and methods. The results of 251 laparoscopic colon resections in the period March 2009 to December 2015 were retrospectively analyzed. The number of complications according to the Dindo-Clavien classification, the mortality rates, and postoperative bed-days were compared in different age groups of patients: those aged under 60, 60—69, 70—79, and 80 years and older, who had undergone 89, 82, 65, 14 operations, respectively. Results. There were no differences between young patients and those aged 6—69 and 70—79 years. However, the patients aged 80 years and older showed a significant (р<0.05) increase in the frequency of anastomotic incompetence, severe complications (Dindo-Clavien grades III—IV), and mortality rates, as well as a rise in the average number of postoperative bed-days. Conclusion. Overall, laparoscopic colon resection is a safe option for elderly patients. However, the patients of the oldest age group require particularly careful preoperative preparation and detailed surgical planning.
