The efficiency of photodynamic therapy (PDT) was clinically studied in 127 patients with recurrent basal cell carcinoma. PDT used the photosensitizer Photolon in a dose of 1.1-1.6 mg/kg, a Latus-2 laser apparatus (662 nm); the laser radiation dose was 100-600 J/cm2. After PDT, a study group of 127 patients included 87 (68.5%) subjects without recurrences and 40 (31.5%) were diagnosed as having recurrences. The lower recurrence rates were seen in the patients who had previously undergone radiotherapy or PDT (20.5 and 25.0%, respectively). After cryo-, electro-, laser coagulation, and surgical treatment, the rate of recurrences was 28.6-30.8% and after previous combination treatment, recurrences were diagnosed in 47.2% of cases. Our findings show that the likelihood of a recurrence after PDT depends on the size of a neoplasm and the previous treatment option, i.e. recurrences more frequently develop when the tumor size is above 2 cm and when repeated treatment has been performed using different methods. The adverse reactions and complications due to PDT were evaluated.
