BACKGROUND
Lesions of the scalp are common problem in psoriasis. Desquamation, plaques, crusts, erythema affect the appearance of patients, cause psychological discomfort among them, reduce the activity and life quality, sometimes lead to anxiety and depression. There are many drugs for the treatment of psoriasis, but the proper care, consisting in effective and timely cleansing of the scalp, is extremely important.
OBJECTIVE
To study the impact of including shampoo containing 3% salicylic acid, piroctone olamine and panthenol in complex external therapy of scalp psoriasis on clinical effectiveness and patient satisfaction with treatment.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
Open comparative study in parallel groups was carried out. Desquamation, itching, erythema, infiltration and life quality of patients, the presence of anxiety and depression with subsequent comparison of obtained results were assessed before and on the 7th, 14th and 21st days of treatment.
RESULTS
The study involved 60 patients with psoriasis and scalp lesions (spray active components of which were betamethasone dipropionate and 2% salicylic acid was used in the 1st group, and similar spray plus shampoo containing 3% salicylic acid, piroctone olamine and panthenol were used in the 2nd group). The severity of main symptoms in the groups was similar before treatment (p>0.05), and there was a more pronounced regression (p<0.05) in the 2nd group after treatment. The average score by the DLQI before treatment in the 1st and 2nd groups was 18.43 and 16.46 (p>0.05), respectively, and it was significantly lower (2.83 scores against 7.1 ones, p=0.004) on the 21st day in the 2nd group, as well as the average on the depression scale (2.4 scores against 6.83 ones; p=0.032).
CONCLUSION
Application of shampoo containing 3% salicylic acid, piroctone olamine and panthenol in patients with scalp psoriasis in combination with spray, active components of which were betamethasone dipropionate and 2% salicylic acid, allows not only to achieve the expected therapeutic effect from a combination of topical corticosteroid and keratolytic, but also to improve the life quality by improving appearance, reducing psychological discomfort and decreasing anxiety.
